: FLW Stren at Roosevelt Lake Update 1_29

January 29th, 2009, 02:05 PM
The volunteer committee here in Payson held another meeting this week and made significant progress. Here are some of the high-lites:
April 15th is the final registration and pre-tournament meeting at the Mazatzal Casino in Payson. Registration will be from 4-7 PM and the pre-tournament meeting follows at 7:30 PM.
During the registration and pre-tournament meeting we will be handing out a survey form which will provide the FLW and local communities the economic impact of this tournament. It wonít take more than two minutes to complete. One survey form will be drawn from a box and the winner will receive a $25 Wal-Mart gift card. Okay, I know that will get some comments, but seriously, the data is important so please take two minutes to complete the form.
We will also be handing out bags containing discount coupons from businesses in Payson and Tonto Basin. We are just getting started on this so Iíll update you when we get more input from the communities but so far the feedback has been positive from local businesses.
We will have volunteers in the Cholla parking lot directing traffic from Hwy 188 to the ramp all three days of the tournament. The traffic team will keep things moving as fast as possible to get you on and off the water. Youíll recall from my last post that we will have gas powered carts waiting in the upper parking lot in the morning to transport whoever parks the truck back down to the dock. In the afternoon, those carts will be waiting at the dock to shuttle you to the upper parking lot to retrieve your truck and trailer. There will be several of these carts so you shouldnít have to wait.
We didnít get an exact number of available pro or co-angler spots still available however, I was told there are still openings in both categories. On the FLW website, youíll read that you only need to make a deposit now to enter your name and buy some time to pay the balance.
From some of the posts and PM's Iíve received, two questions seem to be common. One is that the tournament will take place while the spawn is happening which could be an impact and the second concern is related transporting fish to Payson for weigh-in on the final day. I asked FLW these two specific questions. Here is what they said:
As far as the spawn, studies prove that bass sometimes make four or five beds before they lay all of their eggs. Many times this is because of fluctuating water levels or theyíve simply been spooked out of an area for whatever reason. Females caught during the spawn will make a new bed and lay their eggs. Finding a male to fertilize the eggs isnít hard because the male population of bass is so much more plentiful than the female.
For transporting fish, the FLW maintains an overall 98.9% live release ratio, so they have the processes and equipment to properly care for the fish. Other positive contributors specific to this tournament are that the water and ambient temperatures will be relatively cool in April and at this time of year we are typically not fishing in very deep water.
The Hwy 188 Tackle and Supply (located in Tonto Basin) is providing at no cost, storage areas where you can leave your boat overnight during the tournament. These storage areas are secured, in addition there will be security guards posted all night, plus electric power will be provided to re-charge batteries. If youíre interested in this option, contact Dwayne Steel or Jeff Drake at the Hwy 188 Tackle and Supply: 928-479-2535
Donít forget the events at the Payson Wal-Mart in the 18th. FLW sponsors and local sponsors will have displays, AZGFD, TNF, Towns of Payson and Tonto Basin have all confirmed they will have booths set up for all family members i.e. fishing games for kids, lots of information and LIVE music and Live TV coverage. The activities will begin at 3 PM with the weigh-in starting around 4 PM. The final 10 boats will be police escorted from the lake to the Wal-Mart.
