Volunteers for Building Fish Habitat

Hi Everyone,

The next wave of building fish habitat is fast approaching. Below are the scheduled dates from October through January where we will need volunteers to help build fish habitat. The general plan is to meet at 7:30 am at the Mesa Game and Fish Office (7200 E University Drive; Mesa, Arizona 85207). For the days where we will be pouring concrete the cement truck will be scheduled to arrive at 9:30 am the first time and then 9:00 am for all other pours. We will be pouring the 12 concrete fish balls and using the extra cement to build 20-40 polyshrubs. The polyshrubs will be made by filling 5-gallon buckets halfway with cement and placing various lengths of flexible polyethylene pipes into the cement. We are asking everyone who is able to stay for an extra half hour to an hour after we pour the cement to help build these additional structures. Any and all help is welcomed, 18 years or older. Children 14 to 17 years old need to be accompanies by an adult who will supervise them.

We will provide all the tools along with an ice-chest full of bottled water. We have a limited number of work gloves available and I suggest bringing your own pair in case we run out. The molds are made of fiberglass so dress accordingly, long-sleeved shirts and pants are recommended. Closed-toe shoes are required. Donít forget to bring sunscreen as there is minimal shade and most of the work is in direct sunlight.

Jeremy Richards made a short-YouTube video on how we assemble and tear down the molds. It is a great example of what is involved in making the concrete fish balls : http://youtu.be/MOECYMtCZXs

I am trying to get a head count for the first pour and tear down October 8th and October 13th. If you are planning on coming, please send me an email (akjones@azgfd.gov) or pm me letting me know if you are planning to attend the October 8th or October 13th dates.

This is a last ditch effort to find volunteers for the habitat building day coming up. Right now we only have two volunteers for this Thursday and no volunteers for the 13th. Please contact me if you are available at akjones@azgfd.gov.

I would love to come out and volunteer but from what I've seen I would not be able to bring my son Ryder which most people on here know is a very responsible child and would love to help. I saw something about only older kids
( Liability cause we have insurance that wouldn't have to be used )

If that's the case too bad for a missed opportunity for me and my Son.

Would love to come help, but you guys have scheduled all the times during weekdays. Going to be tough finding people who can take off work to volunteer.

The Rig, I talked to our Risk Coordinator and got approval for children under 14 to assist in this project if they are under direct supervision from their parent or guardian. We aren't using power tools or major construction equipment only hand tools. If you want to come help out we'd love to have both you and your son come out. Email or pm me if you guys want to help out on any of the days.

ThereHeIs I know weekdays are hard for a lot of volunteers and we do have one scheduled weekend on Dec 5th. We have to schedule the pours during the weekday to avoid extra costs from the cement truck company who pours the concrete. Last year we seemed to have only a couple more people who came to the weekend day tear down. If we get a big turnout on that Saturday I can try and focus more days on the weekend.

I was going to mention that if you call them they take it all case by case and have over the last few years. I couldnt remember how old your boy was. last I saw him he was like 6 months LOL
But she already answered your question.
Take him out there he will have a blast, kids always like to help.

And for the record, the same stupid comment over and over every time a guy mentions a female is not funny, just makes you look unoriginal, noncreative, and pathetic
