One of the big fears in touching off a weapon at an intruder in the home is the possibility of the round going through a wall or 2 and hitting your child or significant other.
I know some love Glasers but others say it stays in tact and will penetrate drywall.
I personally use "vampire killers". They are normal brass cased bullets with a full powder charge but the bullet itself is actually wood. They are made using dowel rod material. Within 30' I have found them to be very accurate. The destruction they cause would be enough to stop an intruder, especially with a double tap.
Anything that is safe I DONT USE as it wont penetrate drywall its not going to do the damage I need it to do.
I am looking to destroy the threat not tickle it.
Shotgun and birdshot with a ar shorty back up if needed.
I know exactly where to shoot and at what angle not to harm the neighbors, in any position of my house including front or back yard.
one thing I am worried about and always have been is hurting a neighbor kid not because of a lawsuit but it would suck to be hit with friendly fire by someone trying to defend themselves.
killing or maiming a bad guy is no biggy to me, hurting or killing someone innocent would devastate me especially a kid.
How many times have any of you heard of an innocent bystander getting shot in a self defense situation? Not many.
Im not saying blaze away with the .458 winchester, but low velocity rounds dont seem to go as far as people think they do especially after going through 12 inches of bone and muscle.
The problem is I know if im halfway hungover and get woken up at 3am by an intruder my revolver or handgun skills are going to be suspect at best, and shotgun with birdshot or #4 buck im not going to miss....
Ditto that although i use heavy high brass pheasant loads in #6 in my 870 tactical.
However, im much more comfortable going through the house with my Sig than i am a shotgun. Ideally i would clear the house with my Kriss but I cant get it to feed wooden bullet rounds and i dont think the bad guy is going to let me get it out of the safe.
You don't know how many times I have seen grown men shit themselves when you rack a shotgun in a tense situation. never had one try to fight against it yet. however many times with a hand gun or m-16. just sayin
I agree, the sound of a pump shotgun being racked can be very intimidating.
However, by making that sound, I just told the "bad guy" exactly where I am.
My home alarm went off about 2 am Monday morning. It turned out to be an electrical glitch but I did not know that at the time.
All of the windows and doors in my home have sensors but I did not know which "entry point" was compromised.
There is no way I am going to rack a round so the intruder knows I am coming and from what direction.
I cleared the house with my Sig 220. It does have Crimson tracer grips and a tactical flashlight on it but I did not activate either one right of the bat.
If I walk through the house with a light on, on my gun, the perp knows right where I am and can just shoot towards the light.
I only activated the laser sights when I was clearing a specific room.
My intention was IF there was an intruder, I did not want them to know I was awake and walking the house with a gun.
I have an old 870 Cal highway patrol with an 18" barrel and Pachy pistol grips. We had a thief a few years ago for a while in the hood. Wifey woke me up at 2:00am and said she heard something out front. Look through the shutters and see a flashlight moving around in my F250. Get gun, go out front in my briefs to look around, rack a shell, perp is 3 feet from me in a small bush and runs to an atv in my neighbor's driveway. I get in the truck and go hunting. After three intersections I figure he is gone when I look up and here comes a quad at full speed with no lights and right at me! I ran him into a wall with the truck but he bounced off and went through a school playground and was gone.
Got home to a waiting cop who listened patiently to my story while trying not to look at my gut hanging over my undies. He laughed and said he should be able to follow the brown trail and find the perp. I use 2-3/4" BB but BC is right, the sound of racking a round is priceless. No more burglars in the hood after that.
Whre I live, it isn't an issue. 38spl +P Cor-Bon so I can get the the 12ga. that is loaded with 00 Buck.
