Tree Huggers Trying to Save the CA Delta Smelt

We're in a drought, California included, yet if I read this correctly, the tree hugger environmentalists have succeeded in pushing the government to dump water into salt water to save the delta smelt? This is an old issue but I was not aware this happened. Maybe I'm missing something here.

"To protect smelt from water pumps, government regulators have flushed 1.4 trillion gallons of water into the San Francisco Bay since 2008. That would have been enough to sustain 6.4 million Californians for six years."

Yes, you're missing something here. Without that water pumped into the delta the salt water would encroach further into the Delta and pretty much destroy the bass fishing, smelt and the regional water districts that pull water their clean drinking water from the delta. The smelt is listed as an endangered species mainly to reduce the amount of water being pumped down south and the protecting the ecosystem via Federal means. Listing 1 species as endangered is all that is needed to place controls as to how much water is shipped down south.

It's not just the tree huggers it's also the local bass fisherman as well. Local Guide Bobby Barrack is very active in this area.
