The official Game and Word on Stripers

Got this in an email on what you can and cannot legally do with Stripers at Lake Pleasant.
This Email Comes DIRECT From the AZG&F Dept.

Although the Department manages the striped bass fishery at Lake Pleasant through an unlimited harvest bag and possession limit to promote the take of the abundant striper population, it is illegal for anglers to waste this game fish. As an agency we do not encourage nor condone waste of an edible, and in many places, much sought after species of fish-striped bass. Tossing stripers up on shorelines or even cutting and sinking them is a citable offense under 17-309 A.5. or “knowingly permit an edible portion of a game fish to go to waste….”. Game fish are defined in 17-101 B.13 to include “bass of all species” that encompass not only largemouth and smallmouth bass but also striped bass. Not only is it illegal, it is unethical as well in that a better use for abundant catches of striped bass would be a donation to a charity that can provide meals to folks in need (i.e. St. Vincent DePaul-Phoenix or Paz de Cristo-Mesa). Most anglers know someone that would love a fresh catch of fish to serve up for dinner or fish-fry. It doesn’t take much fish to fill a taco and I can provide a wonderful fish taco recipe that will make you look like a knowledgeable chef at a wild fish dinner.

Lastly anglers should be aware that those whom allow edible portions of game fish to go to waste will be cited by officers (Game and Fish as well as Maricopa Co. Sheriff and Parks). As responsible fisherman, we don’t need this type of behavior exemplified at such a high profile reservoir as Lake Pleasant nor set a questionable example to our young anglers coming up through the ranks.

Jim W. sent me the same word document, "maybe post it on the front page for a few days since a lot of guys dont look at this section?? glad the air got cleared on the subject.
I guess they had a big meeting with their legal department involved and their fisheries people etc. This is the reason I brought up the subject this weekend because I thought the subject was heading south with people getting in trouble, you guys have to remember also, game and fish does not always work in patrol boats,in uniform etc and they have those high powered binos where they can see a fly at a 1/2 mile?? the harvest for stripers is still unlimited, I still wish there was a way to present those fish in a timely manner to food banks, since maybe we could get some positive press as sportsmen??

there has been some pretty good reports out of Humbug on saturdays and sundays?? and at night at the marina on the docks there has been some interesting strippers moving about the area!!!

Who Is Going to inforce the law? I usually fish at Rosie since it is the closest lake to me. I have yet to be checked by a Game & Fish Person for six Years. I personally know that the slot limit has been abused. Seems like a law is useless to those who don't want to abide by them,without inforcement. Just my opinion.

As for St. Vincent DePaul taking in donations of fish...

Unless they have suddenly changed their rules ( I doubt it) they DO NOT accept perishable donations such as fresh fish. We donate to them often and have worked there from time to time. With planning they "may" take fresh fish into the soup kitchen but trying to coordinate that is very difficult. We have not spoken to them in a month so it's possible the rules have changed but doubtful from past experiences with them.
