Due to Danny Westfall's and other recent poor reports on the catching at Oviachic, we changed plans and spent this week at Lake Huites. The lake is up about 50' from our visit last Feb and rose about 3' while there with the rain storms just before we got there and on our next to last day. The fishing went from OK to great with the temp changes and as we figured things out. And there were NO NETS!!!!

Water temp was 74 AM, 77 PM
Air temp was typically high 50's AM to low 80's PM

My fishing partners, Clay Mullenaux and Cade Romney, did the fish counting and according to them we were 650+ fish during the 4 days of fishing. 60% of those fish were 1.5 lbs or less, only 5% were 3-6 lbs. The biggest was a 6.2 on a spinnerbait. Most fish were caught on cranks with the lizard a close second. Top water (poppers, buzzbaits, spooks) also produced well at times but we also caught a lot of fish on flukes, along with some chatter baits, jigs, spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, swimbaits, worms, etc, etc and I even caught one of the bigger fish (5.2) on the old Westy worm and another solid fish on a hand made 'buzzrat' from a fishing buddy in TN (see pictures). I think it will get even better as the water cools down some!

This lake is 4 hrs further driving time past Oviachic but the bypass road going around Obregon helps a lot. You pick it up shortly after the large Yaqui deer dancer statue and for a premium toll charge it takes you almost to Navajoa but the absence of all other toll charges going down makes it easier to pay this one.

Jose Humberto Paredes, the Palmar Lodge owner showed up about halfway through our stay and was a gracious host as always but we do need to work on the food menu a little and fitted sheets for the mattress. We were the only guys fishing the lake except for a couple of locals every other day. The road construction from Guymas to Obregon and then south of Navajoa is still nasty but we can hope for a really nice road some day. It was a 2 1/2 hour wait at the border today which was about the only negative of the trip other than the HEAVY rain the last 3 hours of Wed.
