archery spring bear( drawn tag not over counter) goes until july in units 35 a and b and unit 34 and a few other units.
called last week and no female harvest quotas were made.

Wildlife officials are trying to track down a bear that clawed a camper in his tent near Cherry Creek in Young, Arizona.

The man, in his 20s, was scratched on the backside early Wednesday morning while trying to escape the creature, according to Mike Merchant with the Anasazi Foundation. The victim was a participant in the foundation’s wilderness therapy program, which is designed to treat people with behavioral and substance abuse issues, Merchant said.

The bear was apparently investigating the sleeping man's campsite, and then began pawing at the victim's sleeping bag, according to the Arizona Game and Fish Department.

Someone sprayed the bear with bear spray, and the animal retreated. Based on the description, Game and Fish officers believe the animal was small and possibly young.

The man, who was not identified, was treated at a nearby hospital and then released.

“It was a minor wound,” said Merchant. “We took him to the emergency room where he was treated for an animal bite and returned to our program so he could complete the program.”

Anasazi campers had other close calls with bears before the incident. Campers later told Game and Fish officers at least three different bears came into the camp and raided food sources, and the animals did not fully retreat when bear spray was used.

“There have been some bears and some wildlife in general that have been displaced because of wildfires up in the area that we typically operate in,” Merchant said. “They don't have access to their normal food sources, their normal habitat, and so they're going to be much more dangerous.”

“The bears apparently followed our groups and tracked them,” he said, adding that campers have moved away from the area so they don't interfere with the movement of displaced wildlife.

Game and Fish said a highly-trained tracking unit has set traps and snares nearby, and if one of the offending bears is caught, it will be euthanized.

“If they can confirm the bears were in that area, that bear will be lethally removed because it has become habituated to campers and to humans,” said Dustin Darveau in the department’s Mesa office. “It has lost some of its fear of humans. It has associated humans with a food source or something that it is attractive to that bear.”

The department is asking campers to report bear sightings or “nuisance bear activity,” and to safeguard campsites – especially food sources. A bear’s sense of smell is approximately 100 times better a human’s.

Campsite food sources can include uncleaned BBQs, used plates, discarded wrappers, food stores and pet food, the department said.

Game and Fish issued the following recommendations:

Keep a clean camp. Store food items and trash away from your tent or sleeping area. Even an empty food wrapper can attract a bear from a long distance.
Wash up before going to bed to eliminate odors.
Put food waste and garbage in a secure location such as a bear-proof dumpster.
Carry bear spray.
Encourage others to take these precautions. Discouraging bears from a campground requires everyone do their part.

If you encounter a bear, try to scare the bear away by making yourself look as large as possible, making loud noises, and throwing objects toward it. Do not run. In the rare event of a black bear attack, fight back aggressively and use bear spray.

Since the late 1800s, only one person has been killed in Arizona in a bear attack; a woman walking her dog in Pinetop in 2011. “However, there are numerous reports each year of bears in close proximity to humans that could lead to serious injury or even death,” the department said.
