Still lots of planning going on in support of the FLW Series tournament on Roosevelt Lake this September but we accomplished a few big hurdles this past week, so I thought I’d share them with you. First, the Payson Chamber of Commerce is offering, at no cost, their new discount cards to all FLW anglers and their families for the tournament. You can see all of the discounts offered by clicking on the discount card from the FLW Day in Payson event website at www.paysonrimcountry.com Several hotels, motels, restaurants, businesses and activities are offering significant discounts. Many of you will recall last year we collected coupons from businesses and put them into a bag which was handed out during the pre-tournament meeting. That took a lot of effort and this discount card is easier to use and provide bigger discounts than last year. So here’s the deal, when you call one of these businesses be sure to mention the discount card and the businesses will honor the discount listed. When you get to the pre-tournament meeting, the cards will be handed out for your family and friends to use throughout Payson and the Rim Country while you’re fish the tournament. In addition to the discount cards, there will be other coupons from local businesses free for the taking.

We now have written approval to coordinate an Air National Guard flyover for the September 18th FLW Day in Payson event. We’re still working the details so we can’t say it positively will happen, but we’re 98% of the way there. Right now, we’re planning for the flyover just prior to the “media session” where Charlie Evans will introduce and interview nationally known anglers. We’re also happy to announce that we have confirmed the College FLW will be represented during the autograph and medial sessions. The FLW Day in Payson vendor and food booths are filling up fast. If you’re a business that sells hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, etc. or if you’re a food vendor and want to participate call 928-474-5242 X358. We also continue to get confirmations from top anglers that will be attending the FLW Day in Payson and competing in the tournament.

We listened to your inputs from our last Stren event and are implementing your requests. Several requests were to make food and ice more available to anglers early in the morning. In our last update we discussed having bags of ice available to purchase at the Cholla ramp, just prior to getting on the water each morning, this has been approved and will happen thanks to several Tonto Basin businesses. In addition, one of our local restaurants will be offering bag lunches consisting of sandwiches, chips, cookies and a drink for $5.50. They plan to set up a table just off of SR188 about 5 miles from the ramp in Tonto Basin. Their location will allow truck/trailers to pull off onto a parallel private road, purchase the lunches, and then merge right back onto the road. You’ll see signs and lights so you can miss them.

Our goal is to make your experience at the Payson/Roosevelt Lake FLW Series event the best you have ever experienced. We want the FLW, the National Guard as well as the anglers and their families to enjoy the national level tournament experience and the many activities in the area. We’re working hard on a few more “over the top” items that I’ll fill you in on as soon as we get the green light to announce them.

Thanks Frank, Our committee has grown to over 20 members and will likely continue to increase as we get closer to the tournament. In addition to the volunteer committee, we have over 30 volunteers already signed up to help at the pre-tournament meeting, Cholla Recreational Site and the final day weigh-in at Chapman Auto Center in Payson. Payson Parks and Recreation Dept. is hosting the FLW Day in Payson and its really going to be a hoot. People that attend are going to be amazed by who will be in attendance and the events planned. Assistance and coordination by the National Guard, the FLW and many sponsors has been overwhelming. But the MOST credit goes to the anglers that fish the tournaments. Last year we had 148 registered boats at the Stren event and some of the largest crowds to attend any FLW Stren weigh-ins. We believe that this is a clear message that western anglers will support tournaments that accommodate the anglers and their families as well as offer a good chance of a paycheck. This is why we are doing all we can to support the anglers and communicate as much information as we can. We hope to see as many anglers back for this Series event that can make it, and we look forward to future national level bass fishing tournaments on Roosevelt Lake.
