Not overlooked dude....still one of the best fisherys in the state for big LM..
Hey Bob! Congrats on the bass. It is addicting. You 5 wt will handle " the bass of a lifetime" no problemo. I fish with a 2wt overspooled with a 3 wt floating line and a 6 wt with a sink tip line for deep water situations. Your saltwater plug is too heavy. I'll bet it was work... Use deer hair poppers and deceivers or clouser minnows. They always work the best for me.Looks like a great outing. I took my first bass on a flyrod yesterday myself. First time I ever targeted anything other than trout with one. I was using the same 8' 5 wt I use for everything to cast a 2" saltwater popping bug. It was a lot of work. Just curious what fly line you were using, and how big of flies you were casting?
I have two reels spooled up and have a 10lb (6 wt flyline) and 12lb (7 wt flyline) tippet on them that I set up years ago just to go target bass, but never got around to it until yesterday. I was always paranoid I would stick the bass of a lifetime on a fly and be toast when he wrapped me.
