Phoenix officer dies in Afghanistan

A Phoenix Police Department officer died in Afghanistan on Saturday while serving in the National Guard.

Staff Sgt. Thomas Rabjohn, 39, of Litchfield Park, was killed in action during combat operations in the Wardak province.

Rabjohn was team leader for the 363rd Ordnance Company based out of Coolidge. Their primary duty is to eliminate improvised explosive devices and provide ordnance disposal, said Arizona National Guard Major Paul Aguirre.

The unit deployed to Afghanistan in April.

"It's very well known that IEDs (are) the biggest danger in Iraq and Afghanistan," Aguirre said.

Before joining the National Guard, Aguirre said Rabjohn was a U.S. Marine and served a tour of duty in Iraq.

"It's a great example for us as Americans," Aguirre said. "Everything he did was about serving others. He was very proud of what he did, and he helped keep the city of Phoenix safe. In his spare time he joined the National Guard, and he was ready to serve and protect his country."
Rabjohn was a Phoenix police officer since September 2002 and worked in the Central City Precinct.

He is survived by his wife, Nikki; and daughters Kylee, 14, Koree, 13, and Kelsee, 12.

"Thomas was a wonderful father and husband," the family said in a statement. "He died doing what he loved. He prided himself on his performance and knowledge of his job both in the military and on the police force. We loved him very much and will miss him even

His daughter goes to school with mine. I was a basic training sergeant at the academy when Rabjohn got certified as a peace officer. What a brutal week.

We will observe a moment of silence for Thomas at the beggining of our Police/Fire/Military Event on Bartlett Oct. 26th.

Fellow zoner and PPD Sergeant Mike Perry is retiring from PPD Friday and heading over there. Please keep him in your prayers and God willing, Mike will make it back safe to fish with us again soon.
