Ok kids.

I am ashamed to mention that I have lived in Az for 34 yrs and never experienced the black river. Having said that, I am going. I know all about the bears, snakes and critters. What I don't know is where to go. I have a vague idea. should I come up from the San Carlos res or go down from the White River side. I have heard of Tick Flat? I need some good advice and instructions. Don't have to worry about me destroying anything. I believe in carry in- carry out. I also don't keep fish. I have also heard of the Pump Station but that seems rather far up. I sure would appreciate the guy's. Thanks.

we are going up this saturday, and all I know is we are going somewhere after you come out of salt river canyon and you hang a right??? We have never gone either and are following up some of Will's co-workers. Wherever we are going, there is smallmouth and trout? We got our permits at Tempe Marine. I am torn between excited and petrified  LOL!! :Iconrotfl should be interesting :1popcorn:

PS, I have lived here for 35 years in October and have never been there either

I will say two things about Back River.................the more remote you go.....the bigger and more plentiful the bass if you are an average fisherperson.........note.....this time of year I move very little because they are spawning.....you will see beds (vacant) everywhere.....if you know anything about HUNTING and bed fishing...the reward will BLOW YOUR MIND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please...be kind to the river!!!!!!!!!!!! catch and release the big ones ....please!!

Please, Please, Please keep the river beautiful and even pick up any other trash you might see. If you want to keep fish, please keep the small ones and release the bigger ones, like Johnma said, the bigger ones will be spawning and a lot of people keep all the big spawners. Catch and Release! Take a camera.
One of the best first time spots is tick flat. Its a long 4wd road in, but you can camp down by the river and fishing is usually very good. Try going upstream and the farther you hike the fishing will get better. That goes for anywhere on the river.
Tick Flat turn off is about 20 miles up the highway after you turn off the salt river canyon towards Whiteriver. There are small signs posted off the side of the highway.
Good luck, should be a blast.

Go to the pump station or ten of diamonds, it is cooler and lots of tall pines. Tick flats is good but very crowded and hot. Go through san carlos and turn left to point of pines and follow the signs at point of pines.

Wide world of maps has a book w/ the whole back river in topo maps. I bought 1 about 9 years ago for maybe $6. Well worth the money. This book has both sides of the river and follows it all the way through Alpine. It even has the degree of getting to spots.
Funny thing is it seemed the more difficult the trip the more people we found.

so, with all this wonderful advice, got any on what to throw?? crankbaits, spinners? worms? what works well? where to look for fish? are they usually in pools or closer to the banks? Is there also trout in those parts of the Black River?? I think we are going where Stickbait described. Any info on what to use and how to fish it would be awesome!! thanks guys!

Heading up tomorrow evening, going to be a blast.
Those rebels tore the smallies up on the black.

My buddy who used to goto the black alot used white twin tail grubs for most of there catching.

Ok. First off you will find the pools. In the pools throw 4 in. senkos in crawfish colors as well as 4 in straight tail and curly tail worms in crawfish colors and purple. DO NOT IGNORE THE RAPPIDS. You would be surprised the amount of fish holding along the shoreline where there are rapids. you will find the rapids between the pools. Throw a senko upstream to the opposite side from where you are and let it float down. Once it gets past you it is harder to get the fish in against the current. Last year my buddy was smoke'n them on small and very small rebel crawfish ckrankbaits "the greenish colored ones", you know, the kind that look like crawfish swimming backward. throw them to the oppisite shoreline but don't reel in that much, let it pendgulem out from the shore line, that is a very realistic move! PM me if you have any questions

I hate typing this........Twin tail grubs (you pick the color) and Rebel Crawfish (med size crawfish color).....make it VERY SIMPLE....
now, would someone like to put the fish on thier hooks for them????????
The trick is figuring out HOW to hook the big ones.........................
enough....

Last week the only thing that worked on the beds were 4 in. pumkin seed lizzards. don't know why that was all they would hit but it was. Johnma yeh thanks for telling everyone about the grubs. Yeh the best fishing we always did was actually on the 4 inch yamamoto single ribbon tail jig, which you can't friggin get anymore because they stopped making them.:( They were the best for smallies at the river and Havasu.
