Daily permit to $20.00 per day/ Apache are $15 dollars per day.
Be careful as to which side of the Black you camp on. I fish the river approximately 20 weekends a year, and depending upon where you go, you may cross back and fourth over the river several times. Be sure you are aware of what side you are on an get the proper permit for either San Carlos or Fort Apache. If fishing San carlos, I usually will get my permit from the circle K that AXHOLEROSE mentioned above. They did raise their daily permit to $20.00 per day last year or so. On the other hand if you are fishing the Fort Apache Side, and go up through Salt River Canyon etc. I stop at the Chevron in Carrizo at the 60 and 73 junction. The permits for Fort Apache are $15 dollars per day for the Black/Salt river Camp and Fish. They do close at 10:00 pm, so Tempe marine is a good place to get them if you dont think you can get up there in time. Someone had told me Waterdog Willies also carries them, but I have yet to go there to check it out.
Regulations: The Black River has sections that are subject to catch-and-release regulations. A tribal permit is required.

Directions: From Phoenix, travel east on US 60 (also known as Superstition Freeway) through Glove to Show Low, then southeast on Highway 60 to Springerville. If you want to access the West Fork, take a look at the national forest map or DeLorme. You can take several routes but one way is to travel south on FR 273 to FR 116. Access is by way of dirt roads and a four-wheel drive vehicle is the only way to go. Forest Road 116 is the easiest way. If you want to access the East Fork, continue south from Springerville on 180/191. You can then access the river easiest from Hannagan Meadow or from Alpine on several forest roads. You can also reach the East Fork as it crosses Forest Road 249, and as it parallels Forest Road 276 further south.

Lodging: Alpine is the closest town but you'll probably want to stay in Springerville: Springerville Inn, (520) 333-4365. If you do want to stay in the immediate Alpine area, wild as it is, Mountain Hi Lodge, (520) 339-4311, or Hannagan Meadow Lodge, (520) 339-4370. You can also stay in Greer if you plan to fish the West Fork of the Black and the Little Colorado. Try the Red Setter Inn, (520) 735-7441, or Greer Lodge, (520) 735-7216.

Stay with your smaller, 3 and 4" mister twister type baits. Smoke, pumpkin seed, and watermelon will be all you need. Cranks and other baits will work also. But the twister's will get you one on the first and the last cast you make. Port o pines is where I go. And the further I walk, the better ( Bigger) the fish are. You will be wading, so bring some old shoes, and a fanny pack to carry some extra bait. Because once you walk a few miles and 50 fish or so, you won't want to go back to camp to get more. Put it in the water and they will come.

Crow,
The best possible way in is to go right at the Carrizo Junction turnoff to Whiteriver. Approximately 12.1 miles west is a little Indian town called Cedar Creek. The dirt road you need is 3.1 miles before you reach the town. See if the Indians will tell you specifically which dirt road goes in from there.

All sound advice. Don't be affraid to switch it up every so often to find if one thing is working better than another....but anything with a hook will catch something. Some of the best fishing I've experienced has been while standing in the middle of the river and casting towards shore.

I'm heading up there first thing tomorrow morning....CAN'T WAIT!!!

Black River will blow your mind if youve never been. Ive gone many many times and found the black river crossing the easiest to get to and just as many fish as the remote places(for smallies). I go to globe and turn north on 77 heading to Show low, go about 30 before Show low and turn east on 73(small town called Carrizo), follow that about 30 miles? to mile marker 327, turn right at the dirt road there which has a dump area(which every one should use on the way out) and go about 23 miles to "Black river Crossing", You can camp on either side of the bridge and fish-hike up or down river about 2miles. Ultra lights with 2-6lb line. Mornings--small cranks, but Teeny Poprs kill them 2 fish/1lure/1cast alot! then 2-4 inch grubs with small jig heads will produce around 100 fish a day. There are a few big fish(please release) and millions of 1-2 lbs. Have a geart time and watch for bears.

Ok kids. I am ashamed to mention that I have lived in Az for 34 yrs and never experienced the black river. Having said that, I am going. I know all about the bears, snakes and critters. What I don't know is where to go. I have a vague idea. should I come up from the San Carlos res or go down from the White River side. I have heard of Tick Flat? I need some good advice and instructions. Don't have to worry about me destroying anything. I believe in carry in- carry out. I also don't keep fish. I have also heard of the Pump Station but that seems rather far up. I sure would appreciate the guy's. Thanks. 🙇
From the pumping station you should find trout up stream and smallmouth down stream in the beautiful greenish /blueish pools. You can jump from rock to rock! Crawfish imitators, small spoons, super dupers and spinners! Gods country for sure!
