Breaking Rods with braid

Question....

Has anybody else on here ever broken a rod setting the hook using braid? I had read about it, but it had never happened to me until recently...that braided line cuts a rod tip like a razor blade!!!!

Andy,

I have popped off rod eyes (not the tip) when the braid had wrapped around the foot, but I have never broken the tip off of a rod or broken a rod with braid. I use braid for a lot of techniques including Flipping. I have learned to use a softer rod when I have braid on ILO mono or floro, and to back off a little on the hookset.

You said "that braided line cuts a rod tip like a razor blade" I take this to mean you had line wrapped around the rod and set the hook and the line cut off the tip? That would be the first time I've heard that. More detail please.

Thank you, Joe Jensen
I agree, if the braid is wrapped around an eye and you whack one, that will break it. Just on a hookset though, no, but I have what I call my 'braid hookset' which is a little more gentle due to less stretch.
I was dorking around at Silverbell lake and got the braid wrapped around the 2nd guide (it was windy, and I wasn't paying attention), got a bite, and did my "Larry Nixon" set on it (tx rig w/flouro leader) and the line cut my rod behind the 2nd guide. I first thought that the rod had been stressed, but the cut was as smooth as anything I had ever seen. This was 15lb power pro (green) with an 8lb flouro leader. The rod was pretty high quality (E-21 green series that had the Boatcop treatment done to it...redone handle and holographic guides) so after that, I decided it wasn't an issue with the rod, but that the line just cut it.

used to catch a lot of bass ninja fishing the small pond at silverbell. the bigger bass are in the bigger pond but a lot harder to catch.
Twice in Mexico I have broke rods on hooksets. The problem is most of us are endoctrinated into the big hookset like we see the Pros do and while it needs to be with mono, Fluorocarbon & braid require more suttle hooksets like lift the rod & reel is what a person needs most of the time. But sometimes when your not at full attention we slip back to old habits and BAM you break your favorite rod, happened to me twice. JMO
I've broken three rods on hookset with braid. All setting the hook into a "Tree pounder". All three were low end rods.
I have but I think the rod was a little damaged or something cuz I don't set the hook that hard.

dude, quit taking steroids... LOL

this guy sets the hook harder on DS then most people on frogs.
they say if you move the rod tip a foot it can move your bait 3 feet.

Very true!
wrap braid around the rod and set the hook it will crush the rod and break it in a heart beat.
Its like a hangmans nuce, people dont die from suffocation, they die from a broken neck
