I have the chance to buy a used hummunbird 797 w/ the side imaging. This will be quite an upgrade from what I have. My question: Do I put it on the bow or console. My current console graph is ok but I would think you'd want the better graph up front where you spend most of your time. I also understand the SI doesn't work if you put the transducer on the trolling motor. My plan would be keep the console graph where it is and mount the 797 up front w/ the transducer in the recommended spot toward the middle of the boat and then hopefully share the transducer btwn the 2.
Just wanted to get some feedback w/ what you guys do and get the most bang for my buck w/ the $$$ I'm spending.
Thanks for the great info as usual.

Depends on if you use your graph more when you are fishing or cruising and scouting. I personally liek to have a good graph at both the console and the bow.
I fish Skinny water alot. So when I am in less than 10 ft of water I will turn off my graphs all together. IMHO I think it spooks the fish. When I turned them off and then my hook up percentage went up. I now only use them for scouting a spot. I'll turn my front one on once in awhile for a depth check.

My only exception is when I am spooning or Deep D/Sing. Then I'll use my graph to watch lure drop etc.

If I were you I would put it on the console, you will use it's features more often there and if you chase crappie, anchor bait fish for stripers, or slow trolling deep cranks or lures then the console is the best spot.
An old guy once told me " you spend your money where you spend your time" so if you fish from the bow I would put it there. If you troll a lot and fish from the driver's seat, then I would put it there. It's all about where you spend the most time. Good luck
Mount it up front if all you want to use it for is the graph, The maps and the side imaging is pretty nice to have at the console. Mapping is sweet to use at night and you can turn down the back lighting low enough so it doesn't blind you while running down the lake after dark.
if i had side imaging i would put it on the console.
I have fished the 797 for about a year and upgraded to the 1100 series. This is a no brainier if you have used side imaging. You MUST mount it at the console and the transducer at the rear. Side imaging only works between 3 and 6 MPH. Mounting on the bow with your trolling motor is useless except for standard down looking sonar and side imaging distorts every time you rotate the trolling motor. The 797 has an excellent GPS system that is worth it's weight at night from the drivers seat.
It has split screen for viewing side, down, GPS, mapping, and in any combination.
Side imaging is used to see the entire structure on a slow roll by, then position for the sweet spots and use any down looking unit at the bow.
Go to Hummingbird web site for instructions. If you need help PM me.

Exactly, and honestly I have a hard time reading the 797 side imaging, to small IMO. If i had it on the bow, it would be so far away from me while I was standing, I honestly think it would be useless... I probably would never use it on the bow.

With that said, my current boat has the 788 and 778, which are exact same models WITHOUT side imaging, and I LOVE the GPS and the sonar. Humminbirds are AWESOME!!
I have one at both locations the SI works up front you just run straight for awhile and get you picture. On another note I find my 997 won't dim enough at night unlike the 797 that you can make too dim. Anyone have a cure maybe if I write to Humminbird they can fix this with an upgrade. Its only too bright at night trying to run and use the charts. Anyone else have the same problem?
I have the 798 mounted on a ram mount at the console. You can turn it around and it works great.
If you change the background to black at night, then dim.
Thanks for all the great info as usual. Probably go w/ 797 @ console and move my older matrix 10 to bow. Can't wait to get it and get out on the water. Sounds like the learning curve will be pretty high w/ everything it can do. Arizonadornbusch might be hittin you up for more info thanks.
