Was looking for a few view points on a question that me and some of the boys i fish w/ have been tossing around.Which is more rewarding to you as a bass fisherman,to go out and catch a lot of little fish in a day,or to fish all day for the chance at sticking a toad(10 lbs or better).I think i lean towards the big fish fishing myself.Unless its a tourny then give me my limit and then hunt the big boys.

For me it would be to catch fish on new techniques during slow periods on the lake.

Catching quality fish during a tourny instead of the same fish everyone else is catching, thats not in 1st 2nd and 3rd place

Dont get me wrong I like to catch lots of fish but I like it better when I catch 4-6 2lb-3lb bass than 20-30 under 1 lb bass

Just give me a day to catch fair size bass all day long! That toad will come some day!

Next to moonlit walks on the beach and playing with puppies I'd have to say catching a toad in a tournament is the next favorite. Although catching 30 or 40 fish on topwater, like the day RippinLips and I had on Pleasant with scrappy 2 lb White Bass, is right up there too.

Great conversation piece

Toad and I have evolved from fishing for bass anyplace we can find them .. to trying to locate and catch the larger fish. We fish Saguaro at least once a week and rarely fish anyplace else. (Convenience and persistance) We don't fish in places where a lot of dinks hang out and we don't get dinks too often. A dink by my definition is under a pound. We may not get the fish count some people do working shorelines and visible points, but when we do have a good day, we put some respectable weight in the boat. Some days it all comes together and we catch a good number of nice fish. Our average size for the last month has been over 4 pounds. Smallest are 2+, several 4 and 5's, a couple of 6's and my 9+. May be a different story if there was a decent surface bite this year. We would be targeting a them and enjoying that type of fishing. The surface bite at Saguaro was nothing like last years. JMHO

Everyone that I know who has stuck a pig has also caught lots of dinks along the way :p My preferance would be to catch ten one pounders. It would be a better day on the lake than one 10 lbr. :D But don't get me wrong I still wear the same hat everytime fishin in hopes of the big pig

My goal when I fish is to try to get a limit of 6 fish period, whether they are 1-2 pound average or 3-4 pound average or heavier. I have already caught my over 10# LMB in Florida but would like to catch an over 10# LMB in AZ. I know my time will come. One of the best days on Okeechobee I had was in the month of May when the bigger fish were leaving the shorelines with visible submergent cover (bullrushes, cattails, and maiden cane). The pattern was to fish the other edges and points of this cover. Water depth was only 4-5 feet. One day, from first light to 2 p.m. I caught one of my best 10-bass limits which was around 44#: (9#6 oz, 8# 4 oz, 8# 4 oz, 4# 8 oz, 4#, 3#8 oz, 3#, 2# 8 oz, 2#, 1#). I just followed the pattern and got a mixture of fish. Other times there were schools of 3-4# LMB and the crankbait pattern I used to catch them would get me a 35# 10-fish limit. I remember several tournaments that I had my limit in 15 minutes after my first cast. Those tournaments started at 7 a.m. and at 7:15 a.m. I had my 10-fish limit of 1-2# LMB. So again, I try to get my limit of fish, whether they are 1-2# size, 3-4# size or larger. 8)

Give me the monsters. I will fish hard and all day for weeks on in if I have a solid chance to get a teen fish...........my largest fish ever was 11.12 and that was the best day of my life........I think the larger fish represent a much more difficult challenge, they test your presentation, equipment, and nerves, a good netman helps too.........don't get me wrong, catching 3-6 pound fish is great too, especially here in Arizona, but I need that teen fish.............Franklin 8)

I'll never forget that day on Pleasant with Denny slaying the white bass. What a blast! I've also had 50 fish days on Roosi and 20 fish days on Saguaro and Canyon. I've yet to get that elusive 10 pounder. I have a couple 9's but I want that pig. I won't say the thrill of catching those 2 pounders is gone, but if it ain't a Kodak moment, I won't remember it. I WOULD remember a double digit fish the rest of my life though! There's no doubt in my mind that I've had at least 3 of em on but getting em in the boat is a different story. They know how to wrap in structure. The more they pull, the bigger the hole where the hook is becomes, making it easier to jump and spit it. Your drag better be set just right. You probably only have one chance to net it. Too many things can go wrong and everything needs to go right. I'd take that one hawg over catching twenty 2 to 3 pounders anyday. Unlike Josh of 12 pound fame, I've had to get through my share of dinks to get to that one fish. It'll come... someday.

I guess it depends for me. I've been finding myself tying on some larger baits in search of bigger fish lately and not really worrying about numbers. But when I look at the trophy bass hunters in California I'm amazed with the fish they catch but, I don't know if I could fish four days in a row for one fish. If I could catch them with the frequency of some of the guys like Troy Folkstad and Chris Wolfgram I'm sure I'd do it but for all of the effort it takes to catch one or two fish a week I'd rather get into tournament fishing and go for numbers of good solid keeper bass and maybe a big kicker fish. I know I've already lucked out big time and whenever I walk into my room and see that fish I pinch myself, but I sure hope that won't be the biggest fish of my life, I've got a lot of years bass fishing in me. Josh - with the size fish in these lakes around here combined with all the years fishing you have ahead of you there will be a day that your 12 pounder no longer will be at the top of your list! The experience you're gaining at your age is something every one of the rest of us wish we'd have had by the time we started high school (not in our 30's and 40's). You're going to have a pretty heavy PIG list in the near future! Keep up the good, solid work!

I myself love catching fish period. If I catch a hog then that is a BIG plus. When I catch little dinks it is still a little ruch for me. However I still would like to catch a nice size hog in the process of catching numerous fish. Maybe it is because I am still getting the hang of the bass thing, I dont have as much experience as many of you. Maybe once I start to catch a lot of fish I will just get anxious to catch the big one.

Quantity or Quality?

My dream is to have a day like the one Howard described above, but when I define what fun is, it is very definitely breaking that 10 pound limit with a single fish. No doubt about it. I love a day when I catch numbers (Da -- it really has happened!!), but a LM above 5 lbs is a memory-maker for me and one above 10 would be fulfillment of a life-long dream.
