I am heading up to Woods Canyon this Sunday with fishwrestler and I am trying flyfishing for the first time and I was curious what dry flies are working on the lake. Also I have heard that the red label salmon eggs are kicking butt. Thanks for any advice.
you wouldnt want to use dry flies unless there is a hatch going on at the moment. If you see fish hitting the surface then use a dry, cast it quickly to the spot you saw the rise. Any dry fly will catch them (these are stupid stocked trout, not smart stream trout) just dont use anything bigger than a size 14. During the day they usually dont go for flies on the surface, use a pecock lady or a wooly bugger with a small split shot 20" ahead of the fly. For information and advise you shoud call Arizona Flyfishing, those guys go fishing up there every weekend. Good Luck!
I was just up there and a small z-ray siver with red dots caught me 9 fish, small brown wooly worm with red tail caught 7 fish, split shotted nightcrawlers caught 14 fish. Partners used silver fox spinners ( rainbow) color he caught 4 fish, he also used the above z-ray and caught 8 fish he also used the little minnow spinner and caught 4 fish on it he then used a split shot nightcrawler he caught I think 12 fish on it. The last partner caught 5 fish on z-ray he then went with the split shot crawler and caught about 13 fish on it. We fished from 8:30 am till 3:00 pm the took off. The bait store is now closed so you will have to pick up bait in the lowlands. The Tonto fish hatchery put 2 big brood fish in each lake the ones in Willow Springs have been caught 1 went 11lbs I think the guy chopped its head off then gave it away. Good luck if using power bait go with the red/white/blue I did not use it but some others were getting mild results on it.
I would use split shot worms and mealies we released all fish and I would take a jacket it's going to be cold !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good Luck and have a safe trip and watch the elk with the cold weather they are going to be moving.
