How many of you spend the extra 5 to 10 bucks on these high end lures? They sure look pretty, but do you think the fish can tell the difference? I was looking at the Gobi Popper that Franklin posted. Don't the fish, on topwater baits, just see the bottom of the lure? On the crankbaits, is that little extra flash worth 10 dollars? Curious what some of you might have to say.

it is not generally the finish that gets the fishes attention it is the action. Bandit lures makes a great crankbait that i have never had to fine tune. i also use yozuri, lucky craft, rico, tifa and cultiva. they tend to have a better action right out of the box and alot less fine tuning. And they have a pretty finish.

A good topwater popper-type will set in the water in a way that the rear is lowered in the water allowing fish to see the sides as it hangs. They can see color on these high end lures. Tail feathers are important, as well. There's a big difference between the way a Rico, Splash-It, or G-Splash sit in the water versus a Rebel Pop-R.
As for Cranks color is one thing - the way it runs or wobbles (tight or wide) makes a big difference, too. I would mention hooks but you can always change them out anyway. Bandits come standard with Mustad Triple Grips which I think are about the best crank hooks out there.
In both cases there are pricey lures that people know will catch fish more than others so they pay for them. Most would rather not pay more but if it catches fish better - you bet!

In the words of our beloved Homer Simpson, "Ummmmm L U C K Y C R A F T."

I think Boat Cop's right here. It's not the finish, it's the action. Lucky Craft has some baits out that have flat finishes on them. I have a few Lucky Craft lures (Pointer's, Stacey's, Live Pointer's) and I WANT MORE!!!

Bayou has some very good points too. But I've been in a bait shop, looking at Rico's and I was told, by the sales man, "Do not underestimate a Pop-R." He said the Rico's sit in the watter differently and there is higher quality with Rico's but Pop-R's work good too.

I also like Norman Crank Baits!

I lose less fish on the high end lures. Only because I'm constantly checking my line for nicks so the $20 Rico doesn't get lost in a 8lb LM's lip when it breaks me off.

Tifa lures makes Ricos. prior to ricos comming on the scene, Michaels were the best topwater. they are still made and look just like a rico. why is this you say well, tifa makes them both in the same mold and Michaels were out well before the ricos. they are the same lure. ricos are imported to the US and Michaels are not.

Worth it!

Everyone pretty much hit it on the mark. Lucky Craft, Cultiva, Rico, etc. are far superior out of the package and require limited tuning. If you ever watch the action between a TD Minnow and a Rogue, enough said. Now I do use some cheaper cranks that do need tuning quite extensively, but once tuned they can do some damage. I believe it takes the knowledge to be able to utilize the benfits of the higher end lures to really substantiate their higher price. Just because the lure costs $20 does'nt mean it will automatically catch fish, but if you know why and how to utilize the superior action, finish, etc. thats where they make up the monetary difference.

Hey Boat Cop,

Where can we find Michaels top water baits? I'd like to compare looks and price!

I agree with Franklin on some parts, but I have seen fish take the rico and not touch the yozuri at times when they seem to be finiky (sp).
So franklin we can test this next week, I will throw the Rico and you throw the Yozuri and see which ones produces..
what do you think?

Has anybody ever used a don Ivino top water I have 4 of them 2 different sizes. To me they work better than ricos.I've got 1 of those to. I just bought some sammys by lucky craft they work great. Its a nice change to show the fish something they have not seen alot. But you still can't go wrong with a spook.Just my 2 cents.
Oh yea you tend to go get them expencive lures.

I am with ya on supporting Americans, but until someone in America can build a lure like the Japanese and not charge $75 for it i am stuck ordering them from Japan. I do like Cordell spots and Bandit crankbaits

Joe is that the splash its from Ivono? I had a few of them and did pretty good.
all the others were garbage . nothing holds a candle to a rico, and they hold up when they are whacked on the rocks also.

Really sucks when you have to take those $20+ lures and throw them in the rocks. Most dont last very long but the Rico does. The pointers dont ie sammys also.

Some of you guys will know what I mean about the throwing them into the rocks.
