ok,i have a older pro-craft bass/ski boat with a old minnkota tm on it.Its slow as heck and am looking to get a used tm.My questions are these-1 how many lbs of thrust does a 17' boat need to be ok? 2.are the mounts all kinda the same,or should I look for one with mount and everything?# how much should I ask for the older foot controlled minn kota thats on the boat? The boat is a 89 and the tm is the same year I think??Thanks, atcsteve.

As far as trolling motor power get the biggest motor you can find within your budget....
I have 80# on my 17.5" boat and it hauls with TM. I wouldn't go lower than 70# though. You want to be able to chase down those boils.

Your '89 TM aint worth didley. Just give it to someone or throw it in the garbage.
I have a 24 volt 60# pound thrust off of the boat I just bought? It does have a little bend to the shaft but I used it once with no problems, I put a 109# on it. Well Ernie is
i agree bigger is better. i had almost the same set up as you, found a 70# tm put on it liked it. then wished i had enough battery storage to put a 36 volt on it. 70# will get it done for you, besides a 24 volt set up will pull you around alot longer than a 12 volt.

i love my 74lb thrust on my 18 ft rig and it hauls!
I have a 55lb on a 16 ft skeeter, and will be going with at least a 70lb next time. Put it this way, I never have the 55lb on anything other than max speed, and there are many times I wish I had more go!! As fast as you can afford!
