Knife question

1125 Views 19 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  Ficious
This isnt solely a fishing questions but I am looking for a fixed blade knife in the 50-70$ range and am asking for any help/advice/reviews.

I have narrowed it down to Ka Bar USMC, Buck 119 and an SOG Seal (and/or) Seal Pup.

Any other reccomendations or thoughts?

I would use this mostly use this for camping/survival type situations....I dont hunt but would like to get more into that and if it would function along those lines as well the better.

Thanks!
Nick

look at buck or old timer knifes.
Check out Cold Steel Knives. Unique and razor, I mean RAZOR, sharp out of the box. I have a few of them. One is called The Bushman. It has a huge blade and the knife is one continuous piece of steel. Nothing to break apart...totally no nonsense. The hollow steel handle can be slipped over a stick and used as a badass spear. Inexpensive, too. You should check it out. Awesome survival knife.
fishy....it looks like that metal handle could get slippery if wet....i agree its unique and would make a good speak tip....how is the weight with the hollow handle?
I don't think it is too heavy and if you wanted a better grip, wrap some black cloth tape or something of that sort around it. I don't like the sheath, but that is not a big deal to me. I see you live in Chandler as well. If you want to check it out for yourself, PM me and you can come over and take a look at it...no problem.
Ka Bar USMC
these are the only military design ones correct? (jungle knife) leather type handle with steel? I still have mine that my dad gave me in the late 60's, its never rusted or gotten dull, I lost it for 8 months in the mountains in washington when it snowed, found it when it thawed out that next summer, lays in the truck the boat or where ever I find it and put it. still skins elk and lopes , came with a sharpening stone I used it like 2 times. the knife has been used as a can opener a prybar a hammer, a axe and very often a throwing object.
I like it ;)

my dad has a few org military issue ones that have never been used.

+1
it won't rape your wallet (if you can find them at Big 5 $40) and holds and edge well.
G'day Nick, and et al.,

I've found the Glock field knife to be a really good value. Comes with a nice edge and holds it reasonably well. There are several versions to choose from and they are all within your stated budget level.

I selected the one with the double cut saw blade on the back. Very effective and handy too.

When I first purchased it I put it through the paces in helping me with tree trimming duties. I needed to work on one of our mulberry trees. Yes, not quite the appropriate tool for the task but suitable for testing the effectiveness of the blade and saw. Pretty handy! I thought that I'd need to clean up the edge after all that fun but it was still in great shape.

If you're willing to expand your consideration scope a bit, I'd recommend taking a look at the Leatherman Skeletool. I've found that to be very handy as you'll have it with ya. It has a pocket clip similar to most tactical folders. You can access and manipulate the blade with a single hand. Very handy. That feature along with the other tools makes for a pretty portable and versatile implement that you can have at the ready.

Good luck shopping!

Cheaper than Dirt has the KA-BAR USMC DBA-800 $54.97.
can't go wrong with a buck knife thet hold an edge forever, i have a hunter model with
6" blade have used it for over 35 years, clean a lot of game with it and have never had to resharpen it yet.

'
Get a Buck or Gerber folder with a 4" to 5" blade and you can cut, gut and basically survive anything you are going to run into and they are light on the hip. They don't look like Rambo or Daniel Boone but they are practical and both hold an excellent edge.
