Navigation Light

What Is the rule? I see boats at night with no Nav lights on. I thought the if you are on the water past sundown even in a float tube you must have the 3 lights Red=port, Green=starboard and white pole Aft/anchor light. If you are anchored and not moving you must have the white light on and if you are moving even slightly the other 2 must be on. Besides being a danger to other boaters from across the lake you see a vacant point and work your way over only to have someone turn on the lights at the last minute. Does this bother anyone else or is it just me?

Thats why I hate to go fast at night.
+1 i run my spotlight non stop at night when im running the big mota
i usually leave mine off because of bugs but i turned it on when there is a boat coming
I would turn them off in the past, But after having a guy cut across in front of me in the channel at sag with no lights on (wasn't really that close maybe 150YDS or so but it will make you pucker up when you're on plane the spot light hits them) made me realize that even if the person driving the boat is paying attention they still can't see you. The guy in the back of the boat gets most of the bugs anyway. If he doesn't like it he can get his own boat. Bugs vs. collision, I'll take bugs.

that guy u almos thit had his spotligh on after we ran back in the channel,he was running up in the no wake zone earlier in that night,if it was the same boat
IHV2FSH, that is what the law says, however float tubes dont count.

as for running the spot light , it is against the law to have a white light pointing forward when running. it is ok to turn it on and off for direction, but not leave it on.
any body seen a boat cop on the water at night. Very rare for me to see one

:biggrin::Iconrotfl true that lol
Those hand held spot lights you can get at home depot are great for night fishing. I got two of them and there cheap too. I always keep my nav lights on while night fishing. I don't want someone running into me. There were lots of boats out on Rosey last night until around 1 AM.
Unpowered boats are supposed to have a hand held light to signal other craft at night.
I got a ticket for not having my white light on one time, so they are out there. Don't take it for grated that they are eatin dog nuts and not patrolling at night. Come to think of it, I think it was a Holiday weekend...... guy was a total dickhead to....

Just you:beatingdeadhorse:
On the astro I used to have it set-up so I could run the red/green (navigation lights) without the white (anchor light) and if I saw someone coming my way I'd flip on the achor light from the front console.

Then one night I did that and a boat cop shined his BIG-O spotlight on me and said if he caught me doing that again I'd get a BIG-O coupon.

Needless to say I have always displayed the proper lights from then on.

Westy
There were a few dumb asses on rosey last sat. running with out lights.

shoot there smart compared to people wakeboarding at 1030 at night at canyon and sag,ive seen over 5 in my last two trips doing it,and i bet somebody will b doing it tonight too
I'm happy to see I'm not the only one this bothers. Also you Tournement fisherman most rules state that you must follow the regulations for the lake. Would hate for someone to protest your big fish because you didn't follow the rules. Also if I pull up to an area to fish at night and some inconsiderate person is fishing with out their lights on then I don't give the courtesy of staying out of their space.
Also I see boats running with out the white light on. I think that as fisherman we should do our part and help get these boaters to comply or leave the lake. we are talking about major safety concerns and I like many of you generally have my family or friends onboard.
BC, thanks for the info on the white lights on all the time? did not know that, have seen people with white running lights that are mounted to the boat and used as headlights to go across the lake.

Go to pleasant any "weekday" morning and there are fools running all over the place with no lights on at O dark 30, (worse ones are the 12' aluminum all camo painted "duck boat") running across the lake those bastards are hard to see even with a spot light.
so in my Crawdad with only a TM if i have a big phuckin latern on (white) I can still get a tix for not havin the green and red ones?
