NEVER Loan out your lures...

So, Justin and his dad have a championship tournament coming up on Havasu and he has been doing his homework...practicing every night after work. He thinks he's on a bite so he calls me and says..."dude, i'm in town next weekend...you got any ***** baits I can borrow?" Sure! So I meet him and the Mrs for dinner, let him pick what he wants and away I go. Fast forward...Today I call him and he says, "I can't talk, I got a hook stuck in my finger. I'll call you back." Next I recieve a text message with the pic below. I text him back and say "Is that MY hook?"...his answer "what do you think?" Needless to say...the big baby couldn't pull it out himself and had to go to the ER to get it removed. Now, it's not about the hook cause it can be replaced but you know that bait is gonna be hangin in his garage with a piece of tendon or something dangling off of it! And sorry about the pic, it was a camera phone and Justin taking the pic, not his wife...And Del, can you resize to make it look better?

Ah thanks... What are friends for. Actually true friend would have been right there with me. It is amazing how entertaining the ER can be. I get there and they bring me back pretty quick. Shocking since it is only a fish hook. Here is the conversation:

Hospital: So what are you here for?

Me: I got a fish hook stuck in my finger.

Hospital: Were you fishing?

Me: Hello (holding up my finger)

Hospital: Does it hurt?

Me: Do you get paid for this?

So that ends and they take me back and do x-rays to make sure there is no tendons in the way or to make sure it is not to the bone. Close but not quite. I am hearing the guy and his buddy in the room next to me talk and they are watching cops. The nurse or whoever walks in and asks him how he hurt his shoulder. I couldn't help but laugh at his responce. "well the cops showed up at my house last night and we had a disagreement and they did some kind of move on me that i haven't ever seen on any cops show and now my shoulder hurts i think its broken" Atleast i get good entertainment!!!

So i watch The Green Mile all while they come in and out and take care of everyone but me. Finally getting out. I count myself lucky. First time in 30 years of fishing i have ever gotten a hook stuck that bad. Of course we will see what happens tomorrow night.

That looks like it hurt like hell... Glad I haven't stuck myself that bad yet. (knock on wood...)

I think all you needed was a bottle of good ole maker's mark...

Justin, I had the same thing happen at the end of July. I lifted a small bass into the boat, shakes like crazy freeing himself from treble hook, hook shoots straight up at me like s ling-shot, hook impaled in index finger like yours but only the underside (based on your picture).
I tried for quite a while to remove it. I've removed them from my legs, arms, and hands but it's very difficult from a finger due to the fact the finger bends so easy when pulling on it.
I went to the new Banner Gateway for the same procedure. I hope it works out for you.
oh no!! i hope aaron heath is not reading this thread:eek:.... i hooked the guy the last time we were fishing together.

Yeah i know all about using the line to remove the bait. infact i have had to use it on my dad. Problem is its hard to do when your by yourself and the other thing its real easy to talk about when its not your finger...
Justin sorry about your finger, I bet that hurt like crazy it hurt to look at it. I can relate to finger pain, last Friday I had one of the horses bite the hay as I put it in and he tried to take my finger to his stomach, it is still swelled and I will loose the nail, I felt the tip end bone come loose, I thought I lost it all. You know horses bite and then pull, brought me to my knees.
I hope you heal fast and feel better.
DAMN, DUDE! That sucker went in deep!

Out of curiosity (actually for my own knowledge as to what to expect if "I" ever stick myself that good) how did they remove it? Cut a little bit so the barb doesn't do anymore damage?

I always worry about getting one in my eye when I tug on a snagged lure. Think I'll buy some goggles.
OK Justin, tell us how it happened :)
its real easy to talk about when its not your finger...
I was just joking man, probably damn near impossible from your own finger. Glad you got it out, and luckily only was your finger. Have you guys seen that youtube video of the fish hook in the eye? ouch!
Never mind poor Justin...what about my hook?! LOL.

When Justin and I first started fishing together the same thing happened to me...the only difference was it was a January tournament and my finger was numb so I just pulled it out and went back to fishing. About 10 minutes later Justin turns to me and says "what happened to you?" I look down and have blood all over my reel, rod, boat carpet...everywhere. He didn't even know it happened cause I didn't want him to think I was some idiot so I just manned up, grabbed the needle nose and pulled it out.
It was only about a 10 inch smallmouth. I hooked him and when I got him to the boat I saw he was only hooked by the back hook. As I brought him to the boat the rod was bent and when I reached for the fish the hook came out sling shotting the hook into my finger. The hospital numbed my finger with 2 shots and then pushed the hook threw and cut the barb off. I could have probably done it myself if I could have numbed my finger out there.
Thanks Justin, wanted to know so I might avoid that same thing.

With regard to doing it yourself....when hooked that deep, you never know what that hook has gotten into and what kind of permanent damage you might cause....

Sounds pretty similar as far as how it happened. They gave me two numbing shots at the base of my finger and slit the skin to pull it back through. I think the final damage would have been a lot worse had it gone ahead and tried to rip it out.
Justin what did they use to cut the barb end of the hook off with?
I been there too......hooked my thumb once with the biggest treble hook i had in my tackle box. Got out the pliers and forced the hook through, once the barb was through just cut it off and pulled it right out. Hurt like hell but no insurance makes you do it yourself. Hook yourself good once and you tend to be a bit more careful in the future!!!
i did that a week ago and i got pliers and cut the hook off the bait, then i poped it out thru my skin and pulled it out backwards, and yes it hurts schmuck is dam right i did it the same way

I gave my thumb the same procedure a few months ago after I hooked a fish the exact same way. It looked about the same depth as the pic posted but hard to tell with it being so blurry. It was like 6:45am at Roosey, it was worth the trouble to stay as we caught 30-40 more fish that AM. Had to scavange up a hook from a crank for my topwater bait but it was worth it. I shook like crazy when I was pushing it through the other side though. The first cast after the incident I stuck a 5lber, no lie, with the same bait. Somebody up there was pulling for me that day.

No local needed, but I vividly remember shaking. It was so deep it was a bit difficult getting it angled upwards to break the skin, but I managed to grab the end of the barb with pliers, had my backseater hold those while I cut the shank, then had to pull the rest of it through the skin. Damn it felt good after that barb popped through, it's still stuck in my mind.
PLease post those x-rays. That would be awesome.
