Well this sucks
This first ever opening day for a fishing season is at risk. The Center for Biological diversity has threatened a lawsuit if their petition to the Game and Fish Commission to close the fishery isn't supported by the Commission. Fossil Creek is home to two species of chub, headwater and roundtail. Both are candidates for listing under the Endangered Species Act. Roundtail is considered a sport fish by the Game and Fish Commission rules, but headwater is not. Many streams in Arizona have headwater chub in them and are currently open to fishing (West Clear Creek, East Verde River, Tonto Creek, Christopher Creek, Haigler Creek to name a few). If the Center is successful here with Fossil Creek, they may not stop with Fossil Creek. Trout stocking and fishing on the streams previously listed and likely others may be the next ones in their sights.
