I am trying to put together a good top-water outfit. What rod do you find best for this application? I am most concerned about casting distance. Thanks

Wow. That's a toughy. I prefer a medium heavy moderate fast casting for 1/2 oz and larger buzzbaits. Heavy fast flipping rod for frogs, medium moderate spinning rod for small poppers, and medium fast casting for larger poppers and walk baits. I even use my med light extra fast finnesse rod for casting teeny tiny buzzbaits.

So the answer to your question is ... "It depends"

If you are looking for a one rod does all I might try a medium fast rod, but you will find you might over muscle the hooks on smaller baits if you are not careful.
Allstar used to make a rod called the tws. Had the perfect action for topwater. I think the still make it.
If you're looking for an all around setup, I'd say go MH, fast action, and try to get something over seven foot. Pair it with a high speed reel, I'd do braid. If not go with something in the 15lb range.
