Redoing boat gelcoat

Hi,

I may be picking up a project for the winter.

Boat needs new gelcoat. It's cracked (surface)

Want to change color also.

Was thinking of sanding it down smooth, patching fiberglass and changing color of boat. Can you paint it like a car (I've done few of those)? Or is there a "gel"coat that you need to use.

Any tips, links?

I'm also going to add more storage to it.

gel coat figure about a grand in supplies from start to finish.
paints like a car kinda lots of wet sanding and buffing afterwords. except its sets up in 5 mins or less, ,meaning you trashed your gun.

usually wait 24-48 hours before wetsanding
