Rocky Point, Mexico

I'm heading down there the 12th to do some relaxing and fishing and I've talked to a few people that have had some pretty crazy stories about Penasco. Just out of curiosity, has anyone ever had any problems with police down in Rocky Point?

I've been going there on a consistent basis for the last 5 years and never had any problems and have always been treated with nothing but respect and generosity from the locals. I hear stories every once in a while though of people being held at gunpoint by the police and being asked for large amounts of money for them to be let go. I know there is corruption down there, but has anyone witnessed it first hand or had it happen to them?

I have been going there for years until last Aug, they are really cracking down i stay at the Reef out of all the old port area but last Aug i was pulled over three times, if i didnt know spanish i dont know how much it would have cost me. Now i spend a little more $$ and go to San Carlos or Cabo, fishing is way better anyway!
love it down there....
I have been going down there for about 6-7 years now, I have only had a couple incidents with the local police, the typical $20-$30 traffic violation (my fault), it doesn't bother me at all. I look at it this way, if I was back in the states, those tickets would have cost $140+.

I have property just a bit north of RP on the new highway, I am 100yds from the ocean. Man there isn't anything better than waking up in my tent, stepping outside, ocean breeze in my face, pelican's flying, crack open an ice cold beer, make some breakfast, and head down to the water for some fishing.

DAMN, all this talk, now I gotta go!!!!!!!
it's full of mexicans
I lived in Rp for 4 years and the only time you have a problem its because you caused it. When people go down there they act like morons. They have there laws as do we. I would rather pay 40 bucks for drunk driving than going to the pokey and losing my licence. If you go down respecting there laws than you have no problem. I know the chief of police and hes cracking down on the corruption. It gives the town a bad name and he knows that. Just be smart and have fun.
+1 on what fishermanjonk said.

I get treated great down there. I get treated with respect, because I treat them with respect.

I have made some really good friends down there. We have become very close family friends with Jesus and Annita, and their family, they own Jesus & Annita's Taco Shop on Calle 13, it's bright yellow and on the left side of the road as you are heading west toward the water.

We visit them every time we are down there, Jesus and his family would do anything for us.
don't worry amigo rocky point is safe that town has made a killer come back with that new highway they got know youy can go all the way to kino bay, puerto lobos, killer reef fishing about 1 hr south from rocky on theb MEXICAN PACIFIC COAST HIGHWAY last time is was on that highway u can hit 80-85 the road is killer have fun man don't worry i just got back from mexico i was in mazatlan 12 hrs south of the border did not get any shit it was nice !
I also have been going down there since I was a kid with no trouble. Last summer we went down with a large group of friends and I had more trouble with the cops in Rocky Point than I ever have. We got pulled over and were forced to follow the cop back to the station. There we were accused of D.U.I. along with other charges. At first they refused payment and wanted too lock us up and take the truck, but after an hour of B.S. they took $100 and let us go. Then we got pulled over 3 blocks from the station on the way home. Needless to say they were up to no good.
I still go down there but I would recomend staying in Cholla Bay and avoiding Rocky Point at all cost. Besides Cholla has everything you need..JJs, Tucson Beach, and fishing.
I go down to Los Conches atleast 2 times a year family has a beach house. We drive into rocky point atleast 3 times a day when were down there never had any problems. Except the one time I was driving the wrong way down a one way street (I was Sober). Got pulled over by a female officer but i had a buddy with me that spoke spanish and got me out of the ticket. As long as you behave and respect people locals or not you will be ok.
+1 gonzo just be cool and don't pull any spring break drama out and u will be a ok!
Yea I was just wondering to see if any of this crazy stuff that I hear about has happened to any zoners... I love it down there and the only complaint I have about it is that I can't get down there enough!
I've been going down there for almost forty years. The big problem is drunk americans who leave there minds at the border. I was down twice in July and the town is dead right now. I keep my trailer in a permanent spot in San Rafael trailer park. I've never had a problem. The jellyfish are a problem this time of year. Walk the beach first and look for little blue-purple bubbles at and below the high tide line.

Thanks for all the info!
Underconstruction, I've fished with Ric and he knows where the big fish are. I'm even in some of the pictures on his website.
This is another captian I've fished with.

Thanks; I went on a boat trip once down there and it was ok but would rather go for the big fish (big surprise).
Just spent 3 days there and it is empty compared to a couple of years ago. Last Saturday night at Manny's there was less than 20 people at 8:30pm. JJ's was also empty. I was told that business was off by close to 70% for the past few months. No hassle by anyone but I wasn't breaking any laws.

The border crossing back on Sunday was terrible, almost 3 hours with all of the cars overheating and some running out of gas causing a bigger line. When I pulled up a new shift supervisor was chewing ass and couldn't believe that the line was that long. It is taking them forever to process the people who don't have passports in the normal lane rather than pulling them off into secondary like they should.

The wind blew Friday and Saturday but was beautiful on Sunday when I had to leave. I went with the family and never got out to fish. It was around 98 all weekend, hot during the middle of the day but actually seemed a lot cooler than here.

Do a little work and you should be able to get a nice condo on Sandy Beach for $100 a night.

Yeah we met them the first time we went down, and have become really good friends. His family is awesome, they go out of their way to take care of us. Jesus has added a second floor to the restaurant. He has family in southern Mexico that are going to come up and help us build our house when we are ready. I can't say enough good things about them.
