Trolling motor troubleshooting

So my TM (Motorguide 54lb Thrust, 24V) works, then it will just stop working. Then it works again. I checked connections in the pedal and everything is tight. Should I just start replacing switches in the pedal? It wouldnt work out on the lake last Friday but now it works in the yard. WTF?

does it have a breaker on it that keeps popping?
same thing happend to my minn kota, pull the top off by the arrow if a motorguide has that, and look in there for a loose or frayed wire,
I had the same problem and it was a wire that was pinched by the pedal. Just another thing to look at. I think it is to small of a thrust to be digital right?
if all speeds work and all switches work, i wouldn't even look at the breaker as that would pop and not reset-most are just like house breakers. if all works then pull top cover off motor and you will probably find, burn't or frayed wiring as this is a problem area [ the area where the wiring rotates with motor movement] also give the wiring the wiggle test while running motor to see if it will cut out if nothing is obviously bad.
On my motor guide if i run it on high for a long period of time it will shut off like it tripped the breaker. i let it sit for a min and it works fine.
yo J.. I had the same thing happen to me on my MG.. Check your plug.

younggun, mine did that too and found out it was something inside the plug that did that. rigged a new one up and it never happen again. worth a shot changing it out.
Cant help with troubleshooting on the MG but I can give a suggestion. Throw that POS MG in the trash and buy Minnkota. I have used them for the last 10+ years and never had any problems and I dont baby them either...
MG or MK they both suck! I've had issues with MG, my buddies have issues with their MK. Hell, last week my buddies MK lower shaft completely seperated from the upper shaft. You would think as advanced as outboards and graphs are, they could make a decent trolling motor.

+1 the best thing to do is change out the push style to a higher amp car audio type. stinger makes a good one. its in the breaker not the T.M. the push style over heat without popping
Same thing happened to me two weeks ago at Lees Ferry on my MG. Ground wire at the top like Skeeter Boy said was the culprit on mine.
Good info guys, thanks. I will check the head for the wire problem. Ive done the wiggle test, no luck. Might be corrosion on the screws to the switches under the pedal. Or may be bad switches. It works as of now but I don’t want to trust it. It is not a fuse, I have that much figured out. I will also check the plug.
I'd go with a pinched wire or the plug. A new plug is about $26. i'd open up the one you have and see if one of the wires are loose and either loosing contact of shorting. Might ba an easy fix.
The pinched wire tip sounds like your problem.
so it all came down to corrosion on the jumper wire to the batteries. Man you couldnt see it till you removed it. I was out in some good current and it died. I did all I could do and just about called it a day and checked the jumper. A small ring of corrosion, a quick cleaning, and my TM runs like a champ again. But it was well hidden. Like a ninja.
good catch... thanks for the update, bound to help someone in the future.
next time it doesn't work when you hit the button, try spinning the prop and then hit the button agian. Might be a bad spot in the armatute. Thats what happened to my MK101. Mine was still unger warenty
Wow Jason, with all the problems these guys said they had with there MK,its a good thing you have a Motor Guide....:Iconrotfl
