TEMPE – There'll be fins to the left and fins to the right on Tuesday, Nov. 25, when Arizona Game and Fish Department biologists begin stocking Tempe Town Lake with 26,500 trout.

Fishing is one of the most popular activities at Tempe Town Lake, with hundreds of people participating in the sport each day during the trout-stocking season. About 10,000 trout will be added to Town Lake on Nov. 25 and several thousand more will be added each month through March until the total of 26,500 trout has been reached.

To kick off the trout stocking season, the city of Tempe and Arizona Game and Fish Department will host a trout release celebration starting at 3 p.m. Crews will bring the department’s fishmobile, a truck with a see-through tank that allows people to watch the fish swim before they are released into the lake. Kids and adults can help lower the trout into Town Lake with nets.

Then at 3:15 p.m., a free fishing clinic begins. Participants in the clinic will not be required to have a license and rod, reel and bait will be provided. Normally, a Class A license and trout stamp are required to fish in Town Lake.

Arizona Game and Fish Department experts will demonstrate the best methods of casting and catching, and will also clean and cook several trout. Those in attendance can taste a sample of what's being stocked and learn a few trout-cooking methods.

The event takes place on the north bank of Tempe Town Lake near the Boat Beach. Take Washington/Curry to Lakeview Drive, then park at any of the lots along the lake.
